There are so many options when it comes to cutting stainless steel plate. Plasma, waterjet, laser, shearing and saw cutting each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Here is an easy way to help you choose the right method for your application.

Products and Services

Contour Saw Cut

Contour sawing is the cutting method of choice when the heat affected zone or warping introduced by plasma, oxyfuel, laser or other cutting methods is unacceptable. Producing a cut similar to waterjet cutting, contour saw cutting is a "cold" process. The saw blade moves at a relatively slow speed so very little heat is generated during cutting.

Cutting times and costs are also similar to waterjet however, contour saw cutting offers better edge squareness in gauges over 1". Cut edges are accurate, square and parallel without the "wash" or "flare" commonly associated with waterjet cuts in heavier material. Use our contour saw cut products when the edge condition on your stainless steel shapes is critical.

Contour saw cut product have a clean, accurate, "cold" cut edge. The edge quality is superior to waterjet cutting in heavier gauges.

Quick and easy friction saw cut is the best choice for accuracty in small, lighter gauge parts.

Friction Saw Cut

Largely replaced by laser cutting for many applications, friction saw cutting is a great alternative for short runs of small parts offering a similar cut quality to lasers in lighter gauge materials.

In friction saw cutting, the saw blade moves at high speeds, generating heat from friction to produce the cut. It’s advantages are cost and edge quality. Laser cutting machines are expensive to install and operate, for short runs, friction saw cutting is a more economical alternative. Limited to gauges under 1", friction saw cutting still has a wider range of applications than current laser cutting techology.

Friction saw cutting also produces a high quality square and parallel cut that guarantees easy integration into your finished product.

Other Services

Sheared

We also offer a sheared plate product in gauges up to 1/2" in stainless. Shearing also produces a cold cut edge but may introduce mechanical stresses.

Sheared products are a good solution when you need quantities of square and parallel rectangular blanks.

Friction and contour saw cut rectangles ready for shipping. Note the square and parallel edge condition.

Shape cutting and additional machining operations combine for "one source" buying for your stainless requirements.

Milled Products

We also offer a milled edge product as an alternative to flat bar. Available in a wider range of sizes and gauges, milled products are an alternative when you need a cut edge with a machined finish or when dimensional tolerances are critical.

Our milled edge products are ideal for rectangular blanks which must undergo extensive machining. Parts are accurate and square with no heat affected zone, perfect for your CNC machining centers.

Machining
Services

You can also specify additional machining operations for your shapes or rectangles such as drilling, tapping, boring, spot facing and milling.

Save time and money by having your finished requirement machined complete and ready to use.
